This page allows people who know about PGP to make an informed choice
about myself and my usage of PGP. Also it allows those who don't know
much about PGP to learn what it is and why I use it.
Are you tired of getting spam from numerous people you don't know
or trust? The web-of-trust is a concept that relies on individuals to
verify their identity online. You can read more about email privacy,
but it boils down to spam filters and pgp, in my view.
PGP - Pretty Good Privacy - allows me to digitally sign emails and other files. It also allows me to encrypt emails and files so that only someone else using PGP can decrypt them. PGP is a very secure, proven technology, which is relied upon by many thousands of people around the world.
In PGP, I have generated a set of keys. Those keys allow me to create electronic signatures. The signatures are, mathematically, unique to me. That is to say that only someone who can access my PC and then unlock my PGP keyring can sign anything as me. Given that only I know the password for my PGP keyring, that makes it very unlikely that the signature can be forged.
A digital signature can be considered legally binding for business use. The legislation to support this practice will extend around the world, as governments ratify this new technology.
I work with PGP keys using a variety of programs that are compatible with GnuPG, a complete and free implementation of the OpenPGP standard. You can find a host of suitable programs using gnupg on their frontends page.
Please be careful when you are signing keys. Please sign my key, only if you know that you've verified my identity and that the key is mine. You should only sign a key as being authentic when you are ABSOLUTELY SURE that the key is really authentic! So if you are positive you got the key yourself (on a key signing party) or you got the key through other means and checked it (e.g., by phone) using the fingerprint-mechanism. You should never sign a key based on any assumption.
Unless you know me personally, please don't sign my key with an exportable signature. An exportable signature will follow the key if you send it on to anyone else. Effectively, you're staking your reputation on whether or not this key is valid. That's a heck of a risk. Only people that know me should sign my key as exportable.
